they were walking somewhere else entirely when their foot found a reason to stop
not a big reason, not one anyone would have written down
just a small life, moving slow, on a road that wasn’t made for it
boots and wheels move fast on that path
but they slowed for something they could have crushed without even noticing
no one asked them to
the sun would have set the same way if they’d kept walking
the day would have folded up fine without them
their hand went down anyway
and a whole world shifted because of it
not for praise, not for proof, just because it was there and they saw it
they do this everywhere, not only on that trail
they keep gardens going long after most people would let them die
they sit with people through the parts that are hardest to sit through
they notice what everyone else has learned to step over
some people won’t know what to do with that kind of steadiness
it’ll make their shortcuts look thin next to it
so they’ll call this patience something lesser, because that’s easier than admitting what it is
they’re built from the same instinct that made them stop, once, on an ordinary road, for something with a hundred legs and no voice to ask for help
that wasn’t a small thing
that was the whole thing
